The goal of WikiComponents is to change the way the electronics industry does business.
WikiComponents was founded by Dino Ditta in 2009. Mr. Ditta was originally involved in PCB design with
Calay Systems before moving on to found and run Router Solutions Inc.(RSI), developer of the popular CAMCAD
Professional manufacturing data solution. After its acquisition, he ran the Systems Manufacturing Solutions
division at Mentor Graphics Corp.
Dino himself had this to say about his background:
“When I was running a PCB design service bureau we probably spent 20% of our time on libraries. Naturally
this was a pure cost of doing business, which generated little real value. Afterwards, at RSI we sold
translators to help customers migrate part data and later as we moved into the design-to-manufacturing
realm, we offered a proprietary library for assembly and test needs. Here we saw first-hand that the task
of providing a universal library is just way beyond the abilities of any single company. Watching the
growth of web-based communities led me to the conclusion that here, finally, we have the critical mass we
needed to solve the problem once and for all. WikiComponents was born.”
While the data belongs to the community, WikiComponents is a privately held company. We provide the servers,
the software framework, the software programmers, the site administration and the energy to keep the entire
process running smoothly. For this, WikiComponents Inc. expects to make a small profit by offering
subscriptions for enhanced functionality, such as team building and custom download formats, while still
providing the majority of features for free.
The bulk of these proceeds will be recycled into the community itself, in the form of programming efforts
to improve the site and compensation to the community’s top users, particularly those who, through outstanding
effort, get promoted to the Advisory Board.
We will be increasingly active in the months to come, exhibiting at trade shows, speaking at important
occasions and working closely with industry standards committees like IPC and JEDEC.
